KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
The Knights of Columbus is an international Catholic fraternal order founded by Father Michael J. McGivney in 1882. It has grown from a small, local parish, organization into the international order it is today. It is chartered and designed to benefit the church; the clergy, parishioners, communities and all of society.
Our charitable activities encompass an almost infinite variety of local, national and international projects. From international charitable partnerships with Special Olympics, the Global Wheelchair Mission and Habitat for Humanity to our own Food for Families and Coats for Kids projects and other local charities, the Knights of Columbus set a new all-time record for the 18th consecutive year.
Our charitable donations increased from $175 million in 2015 to a new total of $177,500,673 in 2016. In addition, we achieved our highest level of charitable service in 2016, volunteering more than 75 million hours of service. As a point of interest The Knights of Columbus initiated a campaign in 1951 to lobby for the public adoption of the phrase “under God” in the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance. On June 14, 1954, Flag Day, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a law that added the words “under God” to the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance, completing an effort that the Knights began three years earlier.
Our Council at St. John of the Cross, in Vero Beach, has provided over $2000 and 200 volunteer hours supporting the local and State Special Olympics Aquatic events held at the Sebastian Aquatic center. We donated in excess of $4000 for needy Veterans of Indian River County; provided scholarships and made donations of $3000 to several local elementary schools for needed school supplies.
We are also proud to now be affiliated with the Indian River Country Veteran's Council.
